FONAP – German Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil

The Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil is a multi-stakeholder platform with around 50 members, including companies, non-governmental organisations, associations and the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) as well as Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). All members are committed to use 100 percent sustainable palm oil. Besides boosting significantly the proportion of sustainably produced palm oil, FONAP aims to promote sustainable agricultural supply chains, with a focus on palm oil.

Our commitment on the movement

We are committed to promote sustainable agricultural supply chains, with a focus on palm oil with the aim of balancing ecological, social and economic necessities in the palm oil sector. This includes supply chain transparency and the improvement of existing standards and certification systems, but also an intensified European and intercontinental dialogue. At the same time, a strong commitment in producer countries is part of our activities in order to better anchor human and labour protection rights locally, support small producers and protect ecosystems.

"Jointly committed to a sustainable future”
Ljudmila Metzdorf, Project Manager FONAP

Our story

Since our founding year, we were able to convince many companies to follow us in our commitment for sustainable palm oil. Our unique market surveys show, that all industrial sectors in Germany constantly use more and more sustainable palm oil in their production. This was possible because FONAP is a platform where different stakeholders commonly strive for the same aim. We also strive for improving existing standards and certification schemes. We work in dialogue with governmental partners in Malaysia and Indonesia. One of our major concerns are the needs of small producers. Our members are very proud of financing a FONAP smallholder project in Indonesia. Together with the Indonesian smallholder forum FORTASBI and local communities, we implement elements of social forestry and regenerative agriculture.

Our UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our organisation is most concerned with the following 5 UN SDGs:

  • Goal 1: No Poverty
  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 13: Climate action
  • Goal 15: Life on Land

Our struggles and future plans

Our biggest struggle in the move to sustainable palm oil was and is to convince industrial sectors like animal feed or chemical industries to use 100 percent sustainable palm oil. A milestone on this path was marked by the joining of the German Animal Feed Association in 2020. Yet the latest figures from our market study show that there is still a lot to do on the way to 100% certified palm oil.
We continue to work on getting all sectors (food, animal feed, detergents, cleaning products and cosmetics, as well as other chemicals and pharmaceuticals) to use only sustainable palm oil. In addition, we are striving for more intensive European networking and aim to further increase our engagement in the producing countries.
